THE Haemodialysis Association Klang (HAK) has been awarded the ISO 9001-2008 certification, making it the only dialysis centre operated by a Rotary Club with the certification.

Lloyd‘s Register regional sales head Jason Flanagan presented the certificate to HAK chairman Datuk Anthony Reynolds Peter at the centre located in Wisma Rotary, Persiaran Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang.

HAK, which was officially registered by the Rotary Club of Klang in 1995, began operations the following year in rented premises in Southern Park, Klang.

In 2006, HAK purchased Wisma Rotary and began its operations in 2010.

Former Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim officially launched the building on March 8, 2012.

Now, it has more than 60 staff and Rotarians, helping out, operating two shifts — 7am to 12.30pm and noon to 5pm — with plan for a third shift ending at 9pm.

The centre is is manned by six trained staff nurses, four dialysis assistants under the supervision of Datuk Dr A. Puraviappan and Dr Shaari Bala, who are medical advisers for the centre.

Anthony said he was proud of what the Rotary Club of Klang has achieved.

“Since its establishment, HAK always looks into the welfare of the poor and needy who are unable to get dialysis treatment.

“Private centres charge RM150 to RM250 per treatment and we have made it affordable in our centre.

“Currently Ministry of Health subsidy patients that are charged only RM110 for treatment after a RM100 Government subsidy.

“In fact, each dialysis treatment is subsidised by the Rotary Club of Klang from the funds raised through donations.

“It is very difficult for these patients to afford dialysis and they are required to come three times a week for treatment.

“Each day, we are able to treat about 82 patients which is the maximum for the time being, with the present of machine. We intent to increase 10 more machines in the near future.

“The Finance Ministry approved the Tax Exempt status for the centre.

“Eventually, we plan to buy the lot next to our building to extend the centre and look into plans of providing free dialysis treatments to the people here,” he said.
